Resin Tabletop Miniatures

Processes Involved:

  • Resin 3D printing

  • Files Designs discovered online

  • Files designed through HeroForge

Brief/Overview

The most popular print request received at InIteration is in the tabletop gaming category. This includes replacement game pieces, accessories, and custom containers/boxes, but the majority are for miniatures. 3D printing has enhanced the tabletop gaming experience by offering a means to create highly detailed and customisable miniatures.

Approach

Always keen to get our hands on new rapid prototyping technology, InIteration offers SLA Resin-based 3D printing. This method employs a liquid photopolymer resin that is solidified layer-by-layer using a UV light source. The final result is a finely detailed, high-resolution miniature that captures even the most intricate features. Through practice, we have found that resin 3D printing excels at crafting tabletop miniatures.

FDM 3D printing (filament 3D printing) can be used to print miniatures as well, but its layer lines are typically more noticeable. Filament printing is better employed for printing scenery or structures within a gaming scene; while SLA is best for crafting the delicate and finely detailed characters that inhabit it. 3D printing technology has not only enriched the tabletop gaming community but also opened new avenues for creativity and artistic expression.

Application

We encourage customers to explore 3D repositories such as Thingiverse, MyMiniFactory, and Cults3D for tabletop miniatures. These websites host extensive collections of designs, ranging from fantastical creatures to historical figures. InIteration also assists customers with finding designs or characters. For clients that were looking to add a personal touch to their miniatures, we have worked with them to further customise the design to suit their preferences.

HeroForge has also been a very popular website for character creation (print ready). This web-based tool allows users to pick through an extensive range of body parts and features to customise their own tabletop miniature characters. Once the design is complete, users download the 3D file and send it to InIteration for resin 3D printing.

We ensure that the finished resin prints are ready for painting, and answer any questions when it comes to painting. It is a very rewarding process seeing customers bring their creations to life.
